Setting Up Your Modem

1. Confirm that your modem is connected to the computer and switched on.

2. Click the "Start" menu

3. Go to the "Settings" menu

4. Click the "Control Panel" menu. This will open the Control Panel which is an area where much of the Windows system and hardware setup can be controlled.



5. Click the "view all Control Panel options" link and the full Control Panel will display


6. Double click the "Modems" icon in Control Panel.


7. Set the following:-

  • Country ---- Australia
  • Area Code -- 07
  • If you dial through a PABX, set the number to get an outside line
  • "Tone dialing" should be selected

8. Click "Close"




9. Click the "Add" button.

  • Note: This should only be done if the box is empty as shown or you wish to load a different modem driver. If your modem is loaded go to Part 2 of this guide.



10. Tick the "don't detect modem.." box. Click "Next".




11. Click the "Have Disk" button if you have a driver disk for your modem. If you do not have the driver disk then select one of the "Standard Modems" from the list that matches the speed of your modem. If you selected a Standard modem go to step 13.




12. Click the "Browse" button.




13. Select the modem driver file and then click "OK". Note that you may have different folders on your CD to the ones displayed.




14. Click "OK" to copy the manufacturers files.




15. Select the best match from the list of modem driver files displayed in the window. Click "Next"




16. Select the correct Communications Port. If the modem is an external modem it will usually be either com1 or com2. If the mouse has a 9 pin connector then it will probably be on com1 so use com2 for the modem. If the mouse has a small, round, (PS2) connector, then you should be able to choose either com port, just ensure the modem is physically plugged into the one you choose. Internal modems should be detected by Windows ME when it starts so they should already be assigned to a port.

Click "Next"




17. Your modem is now installed, click "Finish".

18. Click "Close" and you will return to Control Panel.




Setting a Dial Up Connection for the first time




1. In Control Panel double click the "Dialup Networking" icon






2. Click "Next"






3. Name the connection eg "My Internet Connection"

4. Ensure the correct modem driver is listed in the "Select a device" box.

5. Click "Next"




6. Enter the following:-

  • Area Code -- 07
  • Telephone number
  • Country code

7. Click "Next"





8. You should now have successfully created a new Dial Up Connection.

9. Click "Finish"




10. The Dial Up Connection must now be configured. Right click the icon (in this case My Internet Connection) and select "Properties"



11.

  • Untick "Use area code and dialing properties".
  • Ensure that you have the correct phone number entered.




12. Click on the Networking tab at the top, then:-

  • untick "Enable software compression".
  • click the TCP/IP Settings tab.




13. Select:-

  • Server Assigned IP addresses.
  • Server Assigned name server addresses.
  • Untick use "IP header compression".

    Click "OK"




14. Click the "Security" tab at the top of the page. Enter your username and password

Note: Passwords are case sensitive, so uppercase letters must be entered as uppercase and lowercase as lowercase.


15. Click the "Dialing" tab at the top of the page.

  • Set the Default Internet Connection to "Never dial a connection".
  • Set the Redial setting to " 1 ".
  • Untick "Enable idle disconnect".
  • Untick "Disconnect when connection may not be needed".

    Click "OK" and you will drop back to the "Dial-up Networking" window as shown above in point 12.




16. Right click the icon (in this case "My Internet Connection") and select "Create shortcut".




17. Select "yes" to create a shortcut on the desktop.




18. You should now have a shortcut to your Dial-up connection icon somewhere on your desktop as shown above.





Setting subsequent Dial Up Connections


1. Go to the Control Panel and double click the Dial-Up Networking icon as shown in point 1 within Stage 2.


2. Double click the "Make New Connection" icon.



3. Name the connection eg "My Internet Connection 2"

4. Ensure the correct modem driver is listed in the "Select a device" box.

5. Click "Next"



6. Enter the following:-

  • Area Code -- 07
  • Telephone number
  • Country code

7. Click "Next"




8. You should now have successfully created a new Dial Up Connection.

9. Click "Finish"

10. You must now configure this Dial Up Connection as per sections 12 to 18 inclusive in Stage 2 above.

  • Note: With reference to point 17 in stage 2. When making additional connections, only tick " This is the default Internet connection " if you wish to make this the default. Otherwise leave it unticked.




Connecting to the Internet



1. Confirm that your modem is connected to the computer and switched on.

2. Double click the connection icon on your desktop. In this case Twmba.net



3. Confirm the following points are entered:-

  • username
  • password
  • phone number
  • The "save password" box may be ticked if you do not wish to enter your password each time you connect.

Click "Connect".




4. You will normally hear the modem dial and begin to send connection details. The graphic shown above will appear to confirm that the modem is dialling.



5. After your details are sent the system will check these details.



6. When you connect you will see the "Connection Established" window. Click "close". If you do not wish to see this message each time click the "Do not display this message in the future" box.


At this stage you are connected to the internet. You can now open your Web Browser eg ( Netscape or Internet Explorer ) or your email program or other internet software depending on your requirements.



7. When you wish to disconnect from the internet, double click the small icon indicated adjacent to the system clock at the bottom right of the monitor screen. Then click "Disconnect" on the window that appears.
