Setting Up Your Modem



1. Confirm that your modem is connected to the computer and switched on.

2. Click the "Start" menu

3. Go to the "Settings" menu

4. Click the "Control Panel" menu. This will open the Control Panel.








5. Double click the "Phone & Modem Options" icon in Control Panel.




6. Click "Modems" tag and highlight your modem and then click "properties"

7. Confirm the settings under "General", "Diagnostics" and "Advanced".

8. Click the "Change default preferences" button.



9. Confirm the settings under the "General" and "Advanced" tabs.
Click "OK" button on all open dialog boxes and also close the Control Panel

Making a Dial Up Connection



1. Click in order on Start>Programs>Accessories>Communications>Internet Connection Wizard

3.Choose radio button "I want to set up my Internet connection manually....
Click "Next"



Select Connection Type


4. Click next



5. Enter the phone number.

Remove check from "Use area code and dialing rules unless you do need to make an STD phone call to connect.

If it is an STD call then please be aware that additional call costs will be charged by your phone company while you are connected to the Internet.

Next Click "Advanced" button and then click on Addresses tab.

6. Check the IP and DNS server addresses shown.
Then click "OK"

On the step "1 of 3 Internet Account Information" dialog you are returned to click "Next".





7. Enter your username and password and click "Next".

8. Name the connection then click "Next"





9. At this point you can set up your Email now using the appropriate information, or you can do it later.

If you wish to continue with the dial-in setup click on the "No" radio button and the "Next" button.

On the final dialog of the Internet Connection Wizard remove the check on the "To connect to the Internet immediately...." then click the "Finish" button.

Configuring Dial Up Connections

1. Open the Control Panel as previously described and double click the "Network and Dialup Connections" icon

2. Right click the Dialup Connection icon, then click "Properties"

3. Select Networking tab and then "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" entry in text box then click "Properties".

4. Click "Advanced"

5. Ensure "Use IP header compression" is not checked"

6. Click on DNS and ensure that "Register this connection's address in DNS" is not checked

7. Click OK on the two dialog boxes open then return to the Dialup Icon's Properties, Networking window. Click the "Settings" button.

8. Ensure "enable software compression" is not checked.

9. Ensure "Negotiate multi-link for single link connections" is not checked.

10. Click "ok" on this window and the next. Right click on the connection icon you have created and select "Create Shortcut" from the menu. Click yes on the popup dialog to put the icon on the Desktop. Finally, close the "Network & Dialup Connections" dialog. window.

Connecting to the Internet



1. Confirm that your modem is connected to the computer and switched on.

2. Double click the connection icon on your desktop. In this case My Internet Connection



3. Confirm the following points are entered:-

  • username
  • password
  • The "save password" box may be ticked if you do not wish to enter your password each time you connect.

Click "Dial".



4. You will normally hear the modem dial and begin to send connection details. The graphic shown above will appear to confirm that the modem is dialling.


5. After your details are sent the system will check these details.

6. When you connect you will see the "Connection Established" icon appear at the bottom right side of the screen adjacent to the clock.

At this stage you are connected to the internet. You can now open your Web Browser eg ( Netscape or Internet Explorer ) or your email program or other internet software depending on your requirements.


7. When you wish to disconnect from the internet, double click the Connection Established icon adjacent to the system clock at the bottom right of the monitor screen. Then click "Disconnect" on the window that appears.
