Note: Sometimes if the phone line is a bit noisy
Windows will disconnect you, just as you get connected.

Check your settings, in XP, by going to....
1. Start....> Control Panel
2. Select "Phone and Modem Options"
3. Modem....> Properties
4. Advanced.....> Change Default preferences
5. Modify "Cancel the call if not connected within 60 secs"
   to a larger number, try 180
